2007 – the year that the first ever iPhone, and the last Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, were released. It was also the year in which Jordin Sparks won American Idol, and the Spice Girls kicked off a reunion world tour.
As with every year, we were also treated to some incredible music. 2007 saw record-breaking singles, artist breakthroughs and iconic tracks which would later become synonymous with the artists for the rest of their careers.
As it’s 2017, it also means that songs released in 2007 will be TEN YEARS OLD this year! Feeling old yet? We sure do. Let’s take a trip down memory lane, and re-live 17 songs which will be celebrating their tenth birthday this year.
1. ‘Umbrella’ – Rihanna featuring Jay-Z
Starting off with ‘Umbrella’, which was second biggest-selling single of 2007 in the UK. The track reigned supreme at the top of the UK charts for ten weeks during the summer, which coincided with a period of horrendous weather in the country. The media referred to it as the ‘Rihanna Curse’ and campaigned for Rihanna to be knocked off the top spot, to ‘stop the bad weather’. Aren’t they familiar with a typical British summer?!
2. ‘Girlfriend’ – Avril Lavigne
‘Girlfriend’ was the first single to be released from Avril Lavigne’s third studio album The Best Damn Thing. The track became one of Avril’s most successful songs, thanks to its catchy lyrics and funny music video.
3. ‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’ – Soulja Boy Tell’em
Every year, there seems to be a ‘novelty’ track which provides us with a new dance routine to learn. In 2007, Soulja Boy Tell’em made his debut, and brought with him one infectious track and dance fad. If you didn’t attempt ‘Crank That’ at least once, then what did you even do in 2007?
4. ‘About You Now’ – Sugababes
Despite its ever changing line up, Sugababes was one of the most successful girl bands of the noughties. When ‘About You Now’ was released, the line up consisted of Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah. The song went to number one in the UK and stayed at the top for four weeks. ‘About You Now’ remains the eighth biggest-selling girlband song of the 21st century.
5. ‘Rule The World’ – Take That
‘Rule The World’ was a number two hit for Take That, and was written for the film Stardust. Despite being released in October that year, it became the fifth biggest selling single of the year. It also stayed in the Top 100 until April 2009! ‘Rule The World’ is an iconic TT song, and has remained a fan favourite to the present day.
6. ‘She’s So Lovely’ – Scouting For Girls
Scouting For Girls made their debut in 2007 with the catchy track ‘She’s So Lovely’. A lot of people associate the track with the film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, thanks to the infamous scene involving Georgia running down the street dressed as a stuffed olive.
7. ‘Apologize’ – Timbaland featuring OneRepublic
‘Apologize’ was a global hit, topping charts across the world including eight consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop 100 chart. It also peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The track was a breakout hit for OneRepublic and became their first number one song.
8. ‘Beautiful Girls’ – Sean Kingston
Sean Kingston became a star in 2007 when his track ‘Beautiful Girls’ took the world by storm. It took the top spot in the UK, US, Australia and more, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. The song was at the centre of some controversy, and had to be censored on several radio stations due to one of its lyrics.
9. ‘Bleeding Love’ – Leona Lewis
After winning The X Factor in 2006, Leona set the music world alight with her second single, ‘Bleeding Love’. Written by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, and singer-songwriter Jesse McCartney, it was an international hit, topping the charts on both sides of the globe. It was the biggest-selling single of 2007 in the UK, and was the best-selling single of 2008 worldwide.
10. ‘Foundations’ – Kate Nash
Former BRIT School graduate Kate Nash made her breakthrough in 2007. Her second single ‘Foundations’ reached number two on the UK charts. Listeners fell in love with her indie-pop style and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. “You said I must eat so many lemons, cause I am so bitter. I said ‘I’d rather be with your friends mate, cause they are much fitter,'” is one of our favourite lyrics of all time.
11. ‘S.O.S’ – Jonas Brothers
Our favourite band of brothers released ‘S.O.S’ in the States in 2007, and it was rolled out to the rest of the world the following year. It was taken from their second studio album, and helped them on their way to world domination. Despite Nick, Joe and Kevin pursuing personal endeavours at present, this track will forever be one of our favourite jams.
12. ‘Hometown Glory’ – Adele
If you told 2007 Adele what she would go on to achieve in the future, she would have probably laughed in your face. The world was first introduced to Adele and her debut single ‘Hometown Glory’ in 2007, and the track initially failed to chart. It was later re-released as her fourth single in 2008 following the runaway success of her debut album 19. The rest is indeed, history.
13. ‘Thnks fr th Mmrs’ – Fall Out Boy
‘Thnks fr th Mmrs’ was released as the second single from Fall Out Boy’s third studio album. The track was a commercial success for the band and remains as one of their most recognised tracks. Ever wondered why there’s no vowels in the title? ‘Thanks for the Memories’ was reportedly disemvowelled in a facetious act towards their record company, who asked them to shorten their (often lengthy) song titles!
14. ‘See You Again’ – Miley Cyrus
Having already released music as Hannah Montana, ‘See You Again’ was Miley Cyrus’ debut single. This bop was a fair success around the world, most notably in the States where it’s been certified 3x Platinum. It’s safe to say that modern day Miley’s music is very different to ‘See You Again’. However, this track was the perfect first platform for Miley to break away from Hannah Montana and to develop as a soloist in her own right.
15. ‘The Heart Never Lies’ – McFly
‘The Heart Never Lies’ was McFly’s thirteenth hit single. It went to number three in the UK charts, being kept off the top spot by Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’, and Take That’s ‘Rule The World’. Despite this, the single sold well and was a more mature offering from the band. This was reflected in the music video, which was completely different to anything else they’d ever done.
16. ‘Potential Breakup Song’ – Aly and AJ
‘Potential Breakup Song’ was Aly and AJ’s most successful song, going platinum in the US. The pop-rock sound was infectious, and a step up from what the duo had previously released.
17. ‘Beautiful Liar’ – Beyoncé and Shakira
We’re finishing our throwback list with a duet from two of the most successful female artists in recent years. This song was destined for success from the off, with the gorgeous vocals of Beyoncé and Shakira as well as the theme of female empowerment. The pair complement each other beautifully, and don’t aim to out-do the other. The track went to number one across the globe.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our ten year throwback and are now feeling as old as we are!
