Last night (April 14) finally saw Beyoncé headline Coachella and it’s safe to say that she put on an iconic performance which will be talked about for many years to come.
Making history as the first woman of colour to headline the festival (and only the third female to ever headline, following Bjork and Lady Gaga), Beyoncé turned Coachella into Beychella with a two-hour performance bursting with surprises.
Not only did her husband Jay-Z and her sister Solange make appearances, but Queen Bey reformed Destiny’s Child for three songs. We’re still reeling from when they reunited during Beyoncé’s 2013 Super Bowl half-time show, however, Destiny’s Child at Beychella is on another level.
Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams assembled in a Charlie’s Angels-inspired pose before whipping the crowd into a frenzy with performances of ‘Lose My Breath’, ‘Say My Name’ and ‘Soldier’. Not only did they serve some fierce looks, but they delivered some flawless vocals and dance moves too.

Aside from her special guests, Beyoncé slayed the headline slot by performing pitch perfect hit after hit, including ‘Crazy in Love’, ‘Drunk in Love’, and ‘Run the World (Girls)’. The Grammy winner gave the audience every last inch of her energy, throwing herself into superb choreography alongside an army of dancers. The performer also adopted a number of costume changes during her set.
Beyoncé also celebrated her history making performance by singing a rendition of ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, often referred to as the Black American National Anthem. Her set also included samples from Nina Simone, and quotes from civil rights activist Malcolm X and feminist author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Beyoncé was originally due to headline Coachella in 2017 but pulled out on doctor’s orders after falling pregnant with her twins Rumi and Sir Carter. She was replaced by Lady Gaga however, immediately secured her headline slot for 2018.
If, like us, you were completely mesmerised by Beyoncé’s performance last night, then she will be heading out on tour with Jay-Z this summer. OTR II kicks off in Cardiff on June 6 and will visit the UK and Europe before a string of North American dates.
