Jerry and his sister were raised by a single mother.
With F4, he released the band’s debut Mandarin studio album Meteor Rain on August 28, 2001, through Sony Music Taiwan.
In 2004, he won the Mnet Asian Music Award for “Best Asia Pop Artist”.
Along with Andy Lau, Sammi Cheng, Maggie Q, and Nicola Cheung, Jerry Yan co-starred as Ho (Yau’s assistant) in the romantic comedy film Magic Kitchen in 2004.
On August 20, 2004, he released his solo debut album Jerry for You (第一次) via Sony Music Taiwan and it won the China Top Music Award for “Best Album (Hong Kong/Taiwan)” as well as the IFPI Hong Kong Album Sales Award for “Top 10 Selling Mandarin Albums of the Year”.
He bagged the South East Music Chart Award in the “Asia’s Most Popular Singer” category in 2009.
In 2011, he received the Asia Model Award for “Best Asian Star”.
Alongside Ivy Chen, Michelle Chen, and Joe Cheng, Jerry Yan co-starred as Scarface in the 2012 film Ripples of Desire.
He co-starred as Michael Lee in the 2014 heist film Lupin the 3rd. The film is based on the manga of the same name by Monkey Punch and is the 2nd live-action film adaptation of the manga (following Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy (1974)).
In 2014, he brought to life the character of Li Zhongmou (a rich businessperson who had a one-night stand with Wu Tong a few years ago) in the romantic drama television series Loving, Never Forgetting. The show is based on the novel Wu Ai Cheng Huan (无爱承欢) by Lan Bai Se and Jerry Yan’s role in the project won him the Philippines’s Asian Drama Award in the “Best Actor” category in 2015.
Jerry Yan was cast as grown-up Hsu Tai-yu (徐太宇) in the teen romantic comedy-drama film Our Times in 2015.
He appeared as Lu Xingcheng (the editor-in-chief of a well-known magazine) in the romantic comedy television series Count Your Lucky Stars in 2020.
In 2023, Jerry Yan played the role of Xiao Han in the romantic drama television series The Forbidden Flower. For this, he was honored as Harper’s Bazaar China Icon of the Year in the “Charm Icon of the Year” category.
