Shortly after completing her studies, Mukta relocated to Mumbai in order to focus on her acting career where she stayed at a girls’ hostel located in Kurla.
She began taking an interest in acting at an early age and took part in many plays during her high school years which included her first theatre appearance in Ghar Tighancha Hava.
Barve realized that she wanted to take up acting as a profession in grade 10.
Mukta made her debut TV show appearance as Champa in Ghadlay Bighadlay in 1999. Later, in 2004, she was cast in her first feature film Chakwa as Chhaya.
In 2009, Mukta won the award by Sangeet Natak Akademi in the category of “Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar”.
Her most successful television and film credits include Thang (2006), Maati Maay (2007), Sawar Re (2007), Saas Bahu Aur Sensex (2008), Sumbaran (2009), Ek Daav Dhobi Pachhad (2009), Jogwa (2009), Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai (2010), Aaghaat (2009), Badam Rani Gulam Chor (2012), Lagna Pahave Karun (2013), Mangalashtak Once More (2013), Double Seat (2015), Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai 2 (2015), Agnihotra (2009-2010) and Eka Lagnachi Dusri Goshta (2012).
Mukta founded the Mumbai-based Indian Marathi play production and distribution company Rasika Productions in 2013. Her theatrical productions include Chhapa Kata, Lovebirds (2015), and Indira (2015).
Growing up, Mukta felt like she was a socially awkward child, hence did not have many friends.
From 2005 to 2019, she won 7 Maharashtra State Film Awards.
