Someone needs to tell women that wearing a see-through dress isn’t the epitome of sexy anymore – it is a boring choice.
This year has been all about the naked dress. Rita Ora, Florence Pugh, Nicola Peltz-Beckham, Meghan Fox, Dua Lipa and the list goes on … have all been spotted in barely-there dresses.
It has become the uniform of the Hollywood ‘it’ girl, and we are all meant to rant and rave about how groundbreaking it is.
Or is it dull?
Don’t get me wrong, the naked dress definitely had its moment, but that was back in the 1970s when Cher wore one to the Oscars. It had shock value; now, a naked dress is as standard as a slogan T-shirt from Supre in the early 2000s.
The see-through look has also become popular in mainstream culture – women are wearing see-through looks at festivals, pubs and wherever.
At this point, it has become the new jeans with a strapless top. It says, you are edgy, you are here to party, and you probably brought it from ASOS.
Even I own a see-through catsuit that sits in my closet because I’ve yet to find the perfect moment to debut it.
Obviously, wearing something see-through will always feel scandalous, but whenever I have a fun event, I find myself wanting to wear something fun. You know, something with sparkles, sequins or a good texture.
Sure, I could show off my body, which is a vibe, but the garment hanging in my wardrobe is a snooze fest.
This is my issue with the see-through dress. I’m not worried about women showing heaps of skin. I went through a no bra, white tank-top moment, so I get it.
I’m just bored of it.
The see-through look by design is boring. It’s meant to be all about the person’s body, not the garment, and I miss the fashion.
I want to see fashion fails, sequins and ridiculous shapes.
I think it’s why Margot Robbie’sBarbie press tour has been such a huge success. Sure, she looks gorgeous, but she is also having fun with fashion and trying out different looks and that gives us fashion inspiration.
Now us ordinary girls get to try and recreate the looks with our Cotton On budgets and it is a bit fun.
Even though this year has been the year of stars looking naked, when I think of the most iconic sexy looks, I don’t think of Rita Ora looking almost naked.
I think of Nicole Kidman going anywhere and Angelina Jolie in that black Versace dress at The Oscars with that colossal slit.
Do you get me?
You can look naked to be sexy, but you don’t have to bother.

I think women have begun to believe that if they want to look sexy, they need to look practically naked, and yes, that is one very effective way of doing it, but there are others, I promise.
I’m all for a ridiculous celebrity fashion trend, but this has been the most boring yet! Can we bring back dresses over jeans?
Now that was a look.
