Early Life

Phil Colson and Loene Furler welcomed Sia into the world on December 18, 1975, in Adelaide, South Australia.

Her mother teaches art, while her father enjoys music. She attended ‘Adelaide High School’ to study.

Additionally, her father knew members of the Australian rock band “INXS” and was friendly with Colin Hay from “Men at Work,” all of which contributed to her musical proclivity.

Sting, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin were some of her earliest musical influences, and as a young girl, she frequently imitated their stage presence.

Career

She began her career in music in the mid-1990s as a vocalist with the Adelaide-based acid jazz band Crisp, providing vocals to two of its EPs, Word and the Deal (1996) and Delirium (1997).

After the band “Crisp” split up in 1997, Sia released her debut studio album, “OnlySee,” on December 23.

This album featured her entire name, not just Sia, as it did with her later releases. There were 13 tunes on it, and 1200 copies were sold.

Sia relocated to London to further her musical career and be with her boyfriend, Dan Pontifex. However, Pontifex was killed in a car accident before she could leave Australia.

After being devastated by the events, Sia eventually moved to London and started working as a backing vocalist for the British funk and acid jazz band “Jamiroquai.”

She also became affiliated with the English musical group “Zero 7“. She eventually became “unofficial” lead singer for the downtempo band, joining them on tour and lending her voice to each of their first three studio albums.

She provided vocals for the first three studio albums by “Zero 7,” including the songs “Destiny” and “Distractions” from the debut album “Simple Things” (2001), “Somersault” and “Speed Dial No.2” from the follow-up album “When It Falls” (2004), and “The Garden,” which featured five songs.

Her fourth studio album, ‘Some People Have Real Problems,’ was released on January 8, 2008, and sold approximately 20,000 copies in its first week. It opened at #26 on the US Billboard 200, making it her first album to do so in the country.

‘Some People Have Real Problems’ also charted at No. 41 in Australia and was certified gold by the ‘Australian Recording Industry Association’ in 2011.

Her debut video release, ‘TV Is My Parent,’ was released on May 19, 2009, and included:

  • Four music videos.
  • Recordings of a 2007 live concert done in New York City’s ‘Hiro Ballroom.’
  • Some “behind the scenes” footage.

It earned her the ‘ARIA Music Award’ for Best Female Artist.

On June 18, 2010, her fifth studio album ‘We Are Born’ was published, and it debuted at #2 on the Australian Albums Chart and reached #37 on the US Billboard 200.

‘We Are Born’ helped her international exposure by earning her two ‘ARIA Music Awards’ in 2010 and gold accreditation from the ‘Australian Recording Industry Association’ in 2011.

Sia began to withdraw from all the flash and glamour, even donning a mask and refusing to attend promotional appearances, unable to cope with her growing notoriety and longing for a private life.

During this period, her new manager, Jonathan Daniel, suggested she write songs for other artists. Thus began a new chapter in her life, with her taking a break from recording and thriving as a songwriter.

Her successful songwriter collaborations include penning ‘Titanium’ (2011) for David Guetta, ‘Wild Ones’ (2011) for Flo Rida, and co-writing ‘Diamonds’ (2012) for Rihanna with Benny Blanco and StarGate.

Her sixth studio album, ‘1000 Forms of Fear,’ was released on July 4, 2014, and marked her triumphant return as a recording artist.

It debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the ‘Recording Industry Association of America’ (RIAA), propelling her stardom even higher.

Her lead track ‘Chandelier’ from ‘1000 Forms of Fear’ charted at #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

On January 29, 2016, her seventh studio album ‘This Is Acting’ was released, debuted at number one in Australia, and earned the No. Four places on the US Billboard 200, but also fetched her Grammy Awards nomination for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album.’

The single ‘Cheap Thrills’ from her debut album ‘This Is Acting’ propelled her to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song reached number one in over twenty countries and received numerous certifications, including a quadruple platinum certification.

Personal Life

She had a romantic relationship with Dan Pontifex, who died in a car accident. From 2008 to 2011, she had an affair with JD Samson.

In August 2014, she married documentary filmmaker Erik Anders Lang, but the pair separated in December 2016. She is a vegan who has volunteered for several animal welfare organizations.

Net Worth

Sia’s net worth is now projected to be $35 million, making her one of the world’s wealthiest musicians.

Her achievement can be traced back to her acting and singing career.
