Tiki Barber & his twin brother Ronde together on NFL Broadcast

It is the first of its kind that twin brothers Tiki Barber and Ronde are going to share the Fox Sports broadcast booth for the NFL broadcast for the match between the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers on 1/10/2017.

Tiki had played for 10 seasons for New York Giants before his premature retirement in 2006 while Ronde was with the Buccaneers for 16 seasons. Kenny Albert would be with them during the sessions.

The brothers are quite excited about the forthcoming broadcast. The brothers would be supporting their own teams looks like. But what is worrisome is how the fans would be able to differentiate between the twins’ voices.

Tiki said:

“Our voices are a little bit different, but not discernible. So it’s going to be all about those cues, mostly on Kenny to set us up . . . I think as the game goes on it will become easier to tell.”

Tiki added:

“I said the same thing to Ronde: How are people going to know? He said it’s little things, like saying, ‘When I played for the Giants,’ or, ‘Ronde, tell me about this.’ It’s just using some identifiers.”

Tiki Barber’s health issues

Tiki Barber has made a rather abrupt exit in 2006 from the active game. It was said that he wanted to switch over to a career in broadcasting. But Tiki Barber had said that he was leaving due to the physical toll of the game on him which was the worst.

Tiki Barber is suffering from sickle cell anemia. This ‘genetic’ disease has luckily not affected his twin brother Ronde. Tiki Barber’s red blood cells are not flexible and round, but rigid and sickle-shaped.

They become sticky and tend to adhere together thereby clogging the blood vessels and diminishing the blood supply to the organ to which the blood vessels supply blood. There is a pain at that part. This is called a crisis.

It happens with dehydration, infections, smoking, exercise, cold, and stress. These should be prevented in people with sickle cell disease.

It is a marvel that in spite of having this problem, Tiki was into a strenuous game and had achieved success in it!

He needs to be congratulated for having overcome the medical hurdles and reached such great heights.  He inspires others with similar problems.

Tiki’s ‘Be Sickle Smart’

Tiki’s life story inspires. But this great player did not leave things at that. He went on to make efforts to educate people about sickle cell anemia and iron overload.

Patients with sickle cell anemia need frequent blood transfusions and this leads to iron overload in the body. This iron is also damaging to the body and needs to be removed by means of medicines (injectable or oral).

Tiki said:

“I’m determined to get the message out that it’s really important for people who get blood transfusions for sickle cell disease — as well as their families — to know about excess iron and to talk to their doctor about their risk of iron overload,”

Ronde has also joined the campaign and they try to gather money for research for a cure for this disease. Click www.AskTiki.com or call (877) SCD-TIKI (723-8454) for free information on sickle cell anemia.
